BESE-ELEMENTS® Biodegradable ecosystem engineering elements

Biodegradable mats for ecosystem restoration

Biodegradable Ecosystem Engineering Elements are 3D structures made out of potato starch. They are used for habitat improvement and serve as a starting point for ecosystem restoration. BESE-elements® are also used to stimulate the recovery of dune vegetation, bank-side vegetation and reed beds, submerged aquatic vegetation, fish habitat, mangroves, coral reefs, natural filter systems. It is a temporary structure and protection for organisms, facilitating their establishment in order to restore the ecosystem.

Contributions

Stackable 3D matrix (single sheet elements clicked together) made of potato waste and derived starch biopolymer. BESE-elements® provide structures for attachment, reduction of local currents and waves, stability, shelter and protection from predators. Environmental benefits: - Ecosystem restoration (e.g. shellfish reefs, mangroves, sea grass, salt marshes, wetlands) - Habitat creation (i.e. fish, shellfish habitat) - Aquaculture
